Three years is a long time when you’re thinking about personal technology

I just had a good chuckle.

I came across an old post of mine that asked a question. Less than three years later the question was answered.

In my post A low-cost, text-only, instant-start thought capturer with usb, please I noted:

I love writing, but hate lugging a heavy, very noisy notebook that takes 5 minutes to go through boot-up. I want something with ‘instant-on’ with which I can type my thoughts quickly and simply. I want a usb port so I can transfer the txt files across to my pc for later editing and use in Word, OneNote, Zoundry, etc.

All I want is something that will power up straight away; no connections to anything (e.g. net, email, wireless networks) necessary, just a simple text editor with a full-size keyboard (no number keypad block required) that will allow me to whip it out, flick a switch and capture my words of wisdom (ahem).

I love my fountain pens, but my Moleskine papers don’t take to ‘real’ pens (I think they are slightly waxed). But hand-writing stuff, whilst a sensual delight with a good pen or pencil, is de-productive (is there such a word? Well, there is now…) because one has to type out the scribbled scrawl at a later date.

That was written June 7, 2007. On April 3, 2010 Apple started selling the iPad which, although it didn’t come with a usb port, started up instantly and with an Apple bluetooth keyboard allowed me to capture my words of wisdom lickety-split.

I’d like to take the credit for my blog post giving Steve Jobs the idea, but I can’t. According to Peter Cohen and Lev Grossman, Steve was working on the idea for an iPad before the iPhone. Bugger.

But it shows just how quickly technology can move and integrate itself into our lives. I can’t imagine my life without an iPhone and an iPad. Well, I can, but it’s not a world that I want to live in.

What technology did you wish for that eventually (slowly or quickly) came to be and now you can’t live without?
